In addition, we have second stage housing, where abused women and their children can reside for stays of up to six months in self contained apartments while they are receiving support from any of our programs. These apartments are provided on a rent geared to income basis, and applications are available through any of our program staff.

Some things to keep in mind:
Consider what you need to do and where you will go before a crisis or violent episode.
HIDING INTERNET VISITS
Is someone watching your computer activity? Develop a safety plan for you and other family members, including pets (local emergency crisis telephone numbers are listed at the front of every phone book).
Erase your browser's record of your visit AFTER you have left this site. Click Here for instructions.
If possible, have documents (birth certificate, health card, immigration papers, driver's licence, bank account numbers, credit cards, property deeds, mortgages, social insurance number, etc.) readily available.
Keep a packed bag of clothes in a safe place or with a trusted friend.

If you need to leave your home for your safety, do so immediately. Get to a safe place (neighbour, public place with pay phone, store, police station) and contact us. We can arrange emergency transportation to bring you to the shelter.

Women and their children are asked to follow co-operative living guidelines throughout their stay at our residential programs.

Our residential facilities are located in Jackson's Point and Richmond Hill.

Community Programs
Our community programs are based in our Keswick and Markham locations, and are also available at a variety of other sites throughout York Region.
Outreach:
This is a community based support and referral program primarily serving women and their children who are not currently using our residential programs. We provide group and individual support, referral services, safety planning, homework clubs for children, liaison with schools as requested. We also provide public education on violence against women, and are pleased to attend speaking engagements to promote an awareness of this issue.

Let’s Talk:
This is a program designed to help children throughout York Region understand the cycle of abuse and deal with their feelings if they have been exposed to violence against women. We provide this 10-week group model to children aged 4-16, and a separate concurrent group is available for their mothers.

Assistance with transportation and child care for siblings is provided for participants of this program.

Transition:
Staff in this program offer individual practical assistance to women choosing to transition towards a violence free life. Woman may be living in their home, or staying at our shelter or second stage apartments. We provide court support and accompaniment, safety planning, assistance with searching for and maintaining permanent housing, employment information, and referrals to other community based helping agencies. We also help with your interactions and understanding of other organizations or systems such as immigration, schools, police, Children’s Aid Society.
Volunteers:
We welcome volunteers to our organization and provide a full training package to those willing to donate their valuable time to assist us at Sandgate. Opportunities are available to help with:
